Taking Ultram

Before you start to take Ultram, you should discuss your current situation with a doctor. Pain is nothing more than a symptom of another problem. It is always better to get the underlying cause of the pain treated as well as seeking relief from the pain itself. Your doctor will have access to your medical history and is in the best position to advise you.

Ultram should not be taken as well as antidepressants and other psychoactive drugs. It is also necessary to avoid mixing Ultram with alcohol. There is an additive effect which will make you very drowsy and can affect your co-ordination. Driving or any other activity requiring you to be alert should be avoided. The combination with sleeping pills can slow breathing to dangerously low levels. Ultram is usually prescribed in doses of 50mg to 100mg every 4 to 6 hours, but it is not safe to exceed a daily total of 400mg. If you are older or you have a liver or kidney problems, your doctor may advise you to take a lower dosage. A new form of Ultram called Ultram ER has been launched by the manufacturer. If you have long-term pain, this is an extended-release system that is taken once daily. Your doctor will be able to advise which form is best for you. The extended-release tablets should always be taken whole. It can be dangerous to crush the tablet because this releases too much of the drug into your blood stream.

If you forget to take a tablet, never double the dose. Ultram is a powerful medication. If you suspect that you might have taken too much, you should go to a hospital immediately. Although the majority of overdose cases are not fatal, the further you are over the limit, the greater the risk that your body's systems will gradually slow and shut down. Untreated this can result in coma and, in rare cases, death.

What are the side effects?

The most usual reactions are mild and pass quickly, including:

dizziness, drowsiness and general physical weakness;
insomnia;
headache;
changes in mood including increased nervousness and anxiety;
uncontrollable shaking of parts of your body
heartburn or indigestion;
nausea and vomiting;
diarrhea or constipation; and
sweating or chills.

The following side effect are more serious. You should call your doctor immediately if you have:

a rash or swelling of your face, throat, hands, legs and feet;
flu-like symptoms;
difficulty swallowing or breathing;
hallucinations; or
a seizure.
